Puzzling Rosy Sludge on Secluded Tasmanian Shoreline Spurs Fears of Possible Algal Bloom
Agencies in the island state are striving to determine a rosy sludge that has surfaced on a secluded beach, with certain experts worried it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.
Extensive Presence Across Beaches
The pink-tinged sludge was found on a section of a coastal area about 60km south of Hobart. A like substance has also been recorded on parts of a nearby shore and an additional coastal site.

"You usually see a proliferation of this algae after a outbreak of a different species, or something like a marine breeding," she said.

A campaigner, who collected samples of the rosy slime in the state, said it seemed the possible outbreak had "grown significantly" and indicated the aquaculture sector was the probable cause, citing comparable events overseas.
"So the state needs to deliver a clear message here, the government and the environmental agency need to respond to this. We need to study the examples we've gathered and we need to notify the public here," she emphasized.
The scientist said she had worries for community health after experiencing a tingling sensation along her body while being sprayed with tainted seawater.
